Wire It Right: Pre-Construction Coordination for Home Networking
Why a Home’s Connectivity Is Planned Before Framing Starts
Network infrastructure touches almost every system in the home, including lighting, audio, video, security, climate, and outdoor technology. That’s why Aurum Home Technology develops comprehensive network infrastructure documentation during the design phase, coordinating with architects, builders, and electricians before framing begins. The goal is straightforward: ensure every cable pathway, equipment space, and power requirement is resolved on paper. With thoughtful planning, we create networking systems that support homeowners’ busy lifestyles.

The Foundation: Equipment Rooms
Every network starts somewhere, and that location matters. The equipment room or dedicated technology space is sized, positioned centrally relative to the home's wiring loads, and built with the right infrastructure from the start. For larger homes, there may be more than one.
Equipment rooms include dedicated electrical circuits, battery backup for critical systems, and ventilation coordinated with the HVAC contractor to manage heat from active equipment. Aurum develops detailed rack layouts and power specifications during the design phase and delivers them to the building team before framing, so the room functions well right from the start.
Wireless Access Point Planning
For whole-home Wi-Fi, enterprise-grade access points are positioned based on coverage modeling, accounting for floor plan, construction materials, and the number of connected devices the home will support. Each access point includes a wired Cat6A home run back to the equipment room (or rooms), plus power delivered over that same cable via PoE (Power over Ethernet), eliminating the need for a separate electrical outlet at every location.
Outdoor access points follow the same logic, with added coordination details. Weatherproof-rated units serving terraces, pool areas, and garages are routed from exterior mounting locations back to the equipment room before hardscape and landscaping are in place. Access point locations are mapped on both the reflected ceiling plan and the exterior site plan, shared with the architect during design.
Outdoor Infrastructure: TVs, Cameras, and Entry Systems
The outdoor technology conversation extends well beyond audio. Exterior TV locations use a conduit for power, network, and signal connections, plus weatherproof back boxes and structural backing, all specified before hardscape is poured around them. Security cameras at entry points, driveways, and exterior zones also use conduits that are routed back to the equipment room for both network connectivity and PoE power.
Gate and intercom systems add another layer of integration, since the property entry points may be significant distances from the house. On larger properties, that can mean that we run conduit under driveways and through landscape areas so automated gate systems work smoothly.
We document this outdoor infrastructure in our site plans and share it with electricians, pool contractors, landscape architects, and general contractors before ground is broken. With this collaborative approach, we build a system that’s truly elegant and effortless to use.
A System Built to Last
Physical infrastructure is part of the equation. A well-planned network is also architected correctly from the start, with smart home devices, security cameras, audio/video systems, and personal devices operating on separate network segments for both performance and security. Every conduit run, wired drop, and access point location documented during pre-construction serves the same purpose. We ensure our clients’ homes are seamlessly connected, with a powerful network to support their unique lifestyles.
